How to accurately calculate sample size based on previous data for future study in R?

I have data from a previous study that I would like to use to calculate a sample size for future studies.

I would like to leverage R to run this analysis, so how do I calculate power with the significance level being 0.05 in order to accurately calculate the right sample size?

Previous data looks like so:

expected mean difference between group A and group B --> 1.7
Standard deviation --> 1.2

I'm somewhat famliar with the package sample.size.mean but not sure if that is the right approach.

Thanks for the help!
