My company is currently still on a version of Kafka older than v.0.10.1.0, but we are using the latest versions of a Kafka client library.
As I read KIP-62 and this post, it seems the introduction of max.poll.interval.ms along with moving the heartbeat to a background thread is purely a client-side concern. That is to say, old clients used to send a heartbeat when poll() was called, but new versions now send the heartbeat on a background thread and utilize max.poll.interval.ms as an input to the logic used to determine if the heartbeat should be sent. If my understanding is correct, the version of the broker wouldn't matter.
Did KIP-62 require changes on the broker for the new background thread in the client to work correctly?
