visual studio - Android keystore Keytool.exe always telling me password is incorrect

Question

I have a Xamarin App that I sign for the Android Play Store using a keystore file.

When building the app in Visual Studio, I can successfully use my keystore file to sign the app.

But when I try to use keystore.exe to try and change the password (or any command with keystore.exe) I end up with the error

keytool error: java.io.IOException: Keystore was tampered with, or password was incorrect.

Sample Cli command:

.keytool.exe -list -keystore "pathokeystore.keystore" -alias
exampleAlias -storepass apassword -keypass apassword

I've also tried omiting -storepass and -keypass and enter them when the CLI prompts me for them, but same error occurs.

I know I have the correct password, because if I try to re-import the keystore into Visual Studio with anything other than my password, it fails.

Is there anything I can do to make the keytool.exe commands work?
