node.js - Why would mongoose connect and insert successfully but the official MongoDB driver would connect but fail to insert?

I am trying to insertOne document and have been getting the following error all day: name: 'MongoError', message:'(Unauthorized) not authorized on admin to execute command { insert:...}

until I tried instead switching to mongoose, and suddenly it all worked. any idea why that may have happened?
